Noted lunch box collector and co-author of the Illustrated Encyclopedia of Metal Lunch Boxes, Allen Woodall started his collection back in 1983. Today he has amassed one of the largest collections in the country and has opened a museum to display them in Columbus, Georgia. "I think the lunch box museum is the only one in the country," said Woodall. The museum encompasses the second floor of the River Market Antiques and Art Center in Columbus. "I started the museum as an anchor for the River Market Antiques." In September 2002 a traveling exhibition titled "Lunch Box Memories" will start a tour of the nation that will last through 2006. Included in the exhibition will be 75 lunch boxes - five of which were borrowed from Woodall - 20 from another lender, and 50 from the collection of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. Woodall's museum houses a little over 2,000 lunch boxes and 1,400 thermoses. He also has a nice collection of TV trays. The museum is open to the public 9:00am to 6:00pm Eastern time, Monday through Saturday, and noon to 6:00pm Sunday. There is no charge to view the museum. Many items are for sale!
